Today I decided to hike that mountain behind the campground. It is called dog canyon and rises 3100 feet from the visitor center up to a plateau. This is one of the most difficult hikes I have done and one of the most scenic. The scale really does not come through in photos. If you look close on some of them, you’ll see the trail leading
off in the distance. I did 4 1/2 miles out for a total of 9 miles and 3000 feet of ascent. The ascent was pretty steady on the way out and all downhill on the way back with loose gravel and rocks. I found the downhill more difficult than the uphill. They both took the same time to complete. Tomorrow I’m going to do a quick bike ride around Alamogordo, and then pack up and head out towards Silver city New Mexico.
